What is Japanese Lacquerware?

Japanese Lacquerware is a Japanese craft with a wide range of fine and decorative arts, as lacquer has been used in variety of objects such as buddha statues, jewel boxes and tableware. It is often called "japan" in English and one of the most admired traditional handicrafts around the world.

What is lacquer?

Lacquer trees, which grow in East Asia and Southeast Asia, have the property of healing wounds by producing milky white sap that solidifies when it wounds, just like human blood. Lacquerware is wooden objects coated by a lacquer paint, which is the sap produced by lacquer trees.

As the production of lacquer paint is very limited, cashew paint is also commonly used in place of lacquer. Cashew painted lacquerware is much stronger to quality deterioration caused by light and heat.
